Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun, but dogs, men women and children were out in force at noon yesterday on Aldeburgh beach for another of Aldeburgh Music’s free festival events.
With not a cloud in sight, and the midday sun at it’s highest, All Voices to the Beach kicked off with a traditional Punch and Judy show and a group of eager children.
Punch, who must be one of the earliest english anarchists in history (dating back to the 1500s I’m told), was in full swing following his usual pattern of driving Judy to distraction (she really should have left him years ago) and causing chaos with the baby, a string of sausages, a mop and a constable..
At the end of the show, with Punch full scolded and chastised, the children turned to face the audience and forming smaller groups sang, with actions and in unison, various traditional english rhymes and songs with the theme of summer and the seaside. Later they were joined by other singers emerging from various parts of the beach and finally everyone was invited to join in - a fully inclusive and uplifting spectacle and sound… and lovely to be a part of.
