Baptism at St Paul’s Cathedral, Family & Christening Photographer, London

Around 90 children are baptised in the Chapel of the Order of the British Empire in St Paul’s Cathedral each year. The ceremony takes place with other families deep in the crypt, illuminated extremely sparsely by low lamps and candlelight and in an atmosphere of reverence, ritual and reminiscent of London’s rich past.

This London Christening at one of London’s most famous landmarks, was for four-year-old Harry, who had a bit of a wait due to the pandemic, his older brother also having been christened here as a baby. Afterwards the family celebrated just down the road in the Dome at the Ned, a complete contrast to the ceremony, high up in the bright sunshine overlooking London’s city skyline.

Harry took it in all in his stride but as you can tell from the pictures - there are strict rules about photography so I had to focus quickly for the moments - he was immensely proud when it was his turn at that ancient font and mesmorised by his special baptism candle afterwards. This is such a great age to be baptised as by this juncture in childhood, children are fully aware of what is going on around them and, aided by the pictures, are more likely to recall something of such a special moment later on.

As we emerged from the hushed whispers and dimly lit crypt of St Paul’s into the churchyard, by now filled with Sunday strollers and tourists, we paused for some family photographs with the Godparents before Harry and his friends were treated to fun and games at the Ned with the fabulous Sharky and George, one of London’s favourite children’s party entertainers.

If you are interested in my photographing your child’s London christening, baptism, or naming ceremony (or further afield) with natural, unscripted photograpsh so that you remember it just as it felt on the day, please be in touch. I’d love to hear from you.
