Barbican Conservatory Wedding Photographer

Coming down the aisle to confetti in the Barbican Conservatory.

The Barbican Conservatory is undeniably one of the coolest wedding venues London has to offer, and that’s a big statement as there are many contenders for that spot. I am likely biased as I used to live there so for me whenever I am there, in whatever capacity, it is a good day. This iconic example of sixties and seventies brutalist architecture - wonderful for pictures in itself - belies the lush, tropical plant-filled Conservatory where weddings can take place alongside the cinematic lit spaces reminiscent of so many films. The full spectrum of natural and every type of artificial light here to play with as a photographer.

So I was thrilled to bits when F & T approached me to photograph their Barbican wedding. I began at The Ned in Poultry where they quietly and so very sweetly got ready together before heading to the Centre. As their guests started to arrive on Level 3 Lounge with it’s spectacular views of the Lakeside Terrace, St Giles Church and the London cityscape beyond, they slipped away to sit on a bench surrounded by flora and fauna to read to each other their private vows.
Those who were visiting for the first time were doubly awed - not just by the spectacle of the Conservatory with its high glass vaulted ceilings and the concrete and green backdrop of hot-housed nature but also by the personal touches added by F&T including a map of London showing the route to how they met which guests were invited to sign and a very touching display of black and white framed photographs of their parents and grandparents weddings and a brilliant treasure hunt to entertain the kids (and adults) during the reception.

A ceremony with beautiful readings and vows topped off with a proper dowsing of confetti handed out by the little ones, before guests were guided with champagne in hand to the heart of the brutalist jungle interior of the Conservatory to meander, mingle and marvel at their surroundings.

After the wedding breakfast F & T slipped away with me for 20 minutes of first married portraits in the fabulous late autumn light, the drama and magic of their surroundings made all the more so by some strong wind that made for wonderfully romantic and spontaneous moments with F’s dress with the added romance of having spent so much time here while they were dating.

Thence back to the the throng for the speeches with the glow of the heaters casting a warmth and vibrance followed by energetic partying and dancing in the neon glow.
